How a Felted Hat is Made

merino wool, silk, wool carder

Wet felting involves applying extremely hot water, soap, and agitation to the layers of carded wool. The wool will eventually "felt" where the fibers interlock and shrink forming a durable piece of nonwoven material.

The wool for the yardage is hand carded and then wet felted by my own hands.

After acheiving an evenly tight felt yardage, the pattern pieces are cut out and the hat is sewn together on the sewing machine.

The hats are trimmed with velvet suede or vegan ultrasuede leather. The hat is lined with satin ribbon where the brim joins the front of the hat. This provides ultimate comfort to the wearer.

This hat has a small brim to keep the sun out of the eyes and water and snow out of the way. It is a three season hat and is meant to be worn in the snow or rain. The hat comfortably cradles your head to accent your beautiful face.

Needle felting involves using long barbed needles and repeatedly poking at the wool to interweave the fibers and form surface design or sculptural items.

I use both skilled processes of wet felting and needle felting, to create my beautiful one-of-a-kind felted hats.
